Who is Voreqe Bainimarama to lecture Americans on “true and genuine democracy”?
There is only one difference between the Trump supporters’ attack on elected institutions and Voreqe Bainimarama’s 2006 coup.
The difference is that Voreqe Bainimarama succeeded in overthrowing an elected government and the Trump supporters did not.
Fiji’s current “democracy” was imposed on its people by Voreqe Bainimarama without consultation. Neither the people of Fiji nor their Parliament endorsed it. He and his Attorney-General rule the country without consultation.
Their political party is lavishly funded by the business elite. Their Government threatens critics and suppresses dissent.
On Thursday in Washington, American legislators proved that, despite their many differences, that they could come together in the spirit of bipartisanship. They did so to uphold the American constitution and carry out the will of the people.
Bipartisan solutions to Fiji’s problems are nowhere in Voreqe Bainimarama’s agenda.
We condemn, as we have always done, any attack on democracy and lawful institutions anywhere. That includes in our own country.
