The continued disruptions to the water supply that is now being experienced in Suva is yet another damning indictment of the failure of the Water Authority of Fiji and the Fiji First Government that created it. This cannot be tolerated any longer.
These disruptions have caused unnecessary pain and unease to thousands of Fijians who depend on a steady water supply for their daily needs. Sanitation and basic needs should be at the top of government’s priority especially at times like these when the COVID-19 pandemic and Leptospirosis still have the possibility to affect our citizens.
NFP Leader, Professor Biman Prasad, has called on the CEO of WAF to live up to the exorbitant salary that taxpayers are paying him and deliver the best services to Fijians. “These disruptions have gone on for too long without proper scrutiny and satisfactory explanations given by the Minister and the CEO”, Prof. Prasad added.
He said his office was told by WAF Customer Service that there is no timeframe for the restoration of water supply.
“Various explanations from low level at the reservoir, unplanned shutdown to debris clogging purifies and filters thus affecting pumping from catchment are provided since Tuesday”.
“This is totally unacceptable. There is no water when it doesn’t rain. There is no water in the taps when it rains”.
In addition, Professor Prasad stated that NFP in government will put in place a comprehensive infrastructure program that covers Roads, Bridges along with Water and Electricity supply that will ensure best service delivery. This will be done with the full consultation of experts and the public”, he adds.
